For someone who has already reached 40, the right comparison is conditional survival—not life expectancy at birth.
How to interpret these numbers
The figures above come directly from the SSA 2022 period table. “Expected age” is current age plus average remaining years. A milestone probability divides the number surviving to that milestone by the number surviving to age 40. It describes a hypothetical population under 2022 mortality rates, not one person’s fate.
What the table leaves out
